A New Twist on Big Wave Events
by Derek Weber
In a refreshing twist on corporate backed big wave events, a surfer has put on a grass roots challenge with no major sponsors. Evan Valiere hosted the first annual North Shore Big Wave Challenge which spanned the winter season in Hawaiian waters. This paddle-in only event, no jet skis, only armpower, had 6 divisions including: biggest wave of the season, heaviest barrel, best wave ridden by a woman, craziest wipeout, unsponsored …

Good thing we didn’t have to get the rulers out to measure the photos to determine the winner. It was a unanimous decision, Sion’s wave was the largest wave ridden this winter at an outer reef on the North Shore of Oahu. Our choice was reaffirmed by a few witnesses…
Nathan Fletcher: “That was the biggest thing I seen anyone paddle into, ever”
Shane Dorian: “Hands down the biggest wave I’ve seen anyone paddle into.”
Jamie O’Brien: “I looked down that wave and I have never seen a bigger wave before.”

As head judge Johnny Boy Gomes put it ” I could be standing on his shoulders inside this tube. Plus itʻs at maxing Off The Wall and he took the drop late and steep. These waves are rare and that tube was unreal. Bra I want to come out there and get one of those.”

After interviewing Danilo and Marcio about their Peahi paddle in session I had to follow up with Victor Lopez for a little history of the spot. He had just come in from surfing Peahi with Buzzy. They had surfed all morning and it was 15-20 and really nice. So many sessions have gone down at Peahi making it the worlds most famous big wave, I have always been curious of tales of the first few who paddle surfed it. This is the story that he told us about Peahi and …

Back door is one of the meanest and dangerous waves in the world, thick and shallow. No one manhandled Backdoor like Johnny Boy Gomes. He would air drop, then shove his entire arm all the way to his shoulder into the wave, virtually coming to a stop then get blown out after the spit. Do a double fist pump and yell “What!” He’s won it all, Sunset, Pipe Masters, the Shootout, and is always a standout at the Eddie.
