In a refreshing twist on corporate backed big wave events, a surfer has put on a grass roots challenge with no major sponsors. Evan Valiere hosted the first annual North Shore Big Wave Challenge which spanned the winter season in Hawaiian waters. This paddle-in only event, no jet skis, only armpower, had 6 divisions including: biggest wave of the season, heaviest barrel, best wave ridden by a woman, craziest wipeout, unsponsored …

Back door is one of the meanest and dangerous waves in the world, thick and shallow. No one manhandled Backdoor like Johnny Boy Gomes. He would air drop, then shove his entire arm all the way to his shoulder into the wave, virtually coming to a stop then get blown out after the spit.
